Zimbabwe At War - An Urgent Call for Prayer and Action

CAPE TOWN: SAVE ZIMBABWE CAMPAIGN COALITION MARCH

A march will be held to protest the flagrant abuse of human rights in Zimbabwe. This protest coincides with the Parliamentary Network on the World Bank Conference being held at the Cape Town Parliament (15th-18th March). These marches come in the wake of a murder and the tortures of several opposition party members at a prayer meeting in Zimbabwe on Sunday 11 March.

The Save Zimababwe Campaign Coalition is made up of several churches, MDC members, the UCT Zimbabwe Student Society and other organisations campaigning against human rights abuses in Zimbabwe.

Collen Makumbirofa of the Foundation of Reason and Justice (an organisation that is campaigning in South Africa against human rights abuses in Zimababwe) says, "President Mbeki's silence over this issue is deafening. His silence seems to indicate that he condones the attrocities and evils committed by Mugabe's ZANU PF."

The march will start at the Grand Parade and will march around the city centre from Plein Street through Victoria Road, Adderley Street, Queen Victoria Street and will finish at Parliament.

Date: Tomorrow, Saturday, 17 March 2007
Meeting Point: Grand Parade
Time: 10am

TORTURE AND MURDER IN ZIMBABWE AS A PRAYER RALLY IS ATTACKED

On Sunday, 11 March 2007 Mugabe's ZANU PF government attacked people who had gathered for a prayer meeting in Harare. Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) leader Morgan Tsvangirai was tortured. Credible sources claimed that police had taken turns to lift Tsvangirai and smash him against a wall. Tsvangirai had lost consciousness three times but they continued to assault him.

Gift Tandare, an MDC activist, aged 30, was shot dead at this Sunday prayer rally. Tandare left a wife and three children.
