CAPETOWN MARCH (ON 07-02-2008) AGAINST SA POLICE BRUTALITY AND XENOPHOBIA

Foundation of Reason & Justice call upon you to join or support a peaceful march against SA police brutality and xenophobia towards refugees and asylum seekers.

The march is on 7 February 2008, starting at ST George Cathedral, in Capetown at 12:30pm.

The march is organised by People Against Suffering, Suppression, Oppression and Poverty (PASSOP). Foundation of Reason & Justice support this march.

South Africa claim to be a human rights society but tens of thousands of refugees are being denied the right to have asylum permits. The Capetown Home Affairs, Refugee Reception is characterised by xenophobia and massive corruption. Nothing has been done to improve the deplorable situation of refugees and asylum seekers.

Many members of South African Police, Home Affairs officials are corrupt and demands bribes from poor asylum seekers. Instead of working as professionals many police officers are behaving as if there are 'demon possessed.' Zimbabwean asylum seekers are being harassed and arrested without being given an opportunity to apply for asylum. Asylum seekers spend many weeks or months in filth police cells with criminals, while waiting for deportation. Many lives are being endangered and exposed to serious human degradation.

South African police Services inhumane behavior is based on xenophobia, hatred of foreigners especially Zimbabweans.
Refugees in police cells must be released with immediate effect and be given opportunity to get permits.

Subject: Fw: Important - Protest March Thurs 7th Feb 2008
Date: Tue, 5 Feb 2008 23:51:12 -0800 (PST)
Hey everyone,

There will be a protest tomorrow starting at 12.30 tomorrow at St Georges Cathedral in Cape Town, organised by PASSOP and the TAC. We will be protesting against xenophobia and police brutality towards asylum seekers, as well as general maltreatment and discrimination against refugees. You may have read about the midnight raid at a JHB Methodist church, but this sort of victimisation is not limited to Jozi - refugees in Cape Town are also regularly assaulted, pepper sprayed, arrested without charges, solicited for bribes, and denied access to asylum papers and basic human needs, such as food, shelter and water. Many people judge asylum-seekers as illegal immigrants and criminals - this is an unfair generalisation. The vast majority are good people, fleeing violence and poverty in their own countries. Deportation is a death sentence. There are refugees from almost every country in Africa. International students, come and march for your countrymen. South Africans, please come and march against the new Apartheid.

XENOPHOBIA = RACISM

For more information on on this march or on refugee issues please contact me on xxxxxxxxx .
Buses will be available from Tugwell shuttle stop, leaving at 11.30

PLEASE FORWARD THIS EMAIL TO ANY INTERESTED PARTIES
